Hahaha yeah I know that i've seen it on 9gag lol. Dragon Ball is up there with Pokemon and the franchise is maybe close to be iconic to the nation as Godzilla is. We are talking about a country that have food and beverage products with Dbz characters on them.

And with Battle of Gods and the next DBZ movie coming out, maybe Japan has a reignited interest in DBZ? Not as much as elsewhere but just enough to get some attention to the Figuarts? Are you f*ng kidding me? Dragon Ball is like a national symbol in japan. The entire market and industry is based on vending, prize figures, retail merch as well, all originated from Bandai. It's a thriving industry since 1984. J-World?? Do you even know what you are talking about? First off, I don't appreciate your a**hole tone here. Stop being a dick. Mickey Mouse is a national symbol in America but not everything with Mickey sells well or garners the attention you might expect. Popular "national symbols" don't always continue to build large profits across the board. That's business, it goes in waves. Look at Marvel comics, they were in bankruptcy in the mid-90's and now you can't go anywhere without seeing Marvel Superheroes. J-World is a small attraction inside a shopping center, about as big as a decent sized movie theater & food court inside a mall. DBZ is also paired with two mega-popular JUMP series' Naruto and One Piece and some other JUMP series. Not everyone is going there for DBZ. Maybe that would be comparable if J-World was an actual out-door theme park and not an in-door gallery with kid rides. If DBZ was "thriving" so much, why did they pull the DBZ Figuarts off store shelves and go web exclusive with them? That doesn't show strong business confidence. On top of that, most of the "re-issues" are in response to the larger Western demand, NOT the Japanese market. Just because something has a "national presence" doesn't always mean it's pulling record profits or is successful IN EVERY MERCHANDISE PRODUCT. DBZ might be making mega bucks when it comes to Goku beverage cups for example, but a few years ago when it came to Figuarts, Bandai was obviously not pleased enough with the profits that they pulled them from retail stores. I think you don't know what you're talking about.

If DBZ was "thriving" so much, why did they pull the DBZ Figuarts off store shelves and go web exclusive with them? That doesn't show strong business confidence. They made the line Premium Bandai exclusive after 2011 since it's a better business strategy. It's a very tight and popular niche and those release skyrocket in price, it open the door to business opportunities with the after market it creates. You need to understand somthing about Badnai and the Figuarts line; Bandai Namaco are currently controlling almost the entire dbz figure merch industry, prize figuers, lottety via Banpresto, vending, Gashpaons and candy toys via Bandai, retail merch via Unifive and Megahouse. It creates a situation that the Figuarts line is something very speical and valued over time and selling extremly well. The P-Bandai stock in Asia is actually going out of stock months prior to release and the after market skyroot much faster in jp. For example, with the MonsterArts, some releases are limited exclusives, some more well known characters are not.Different selling point, and a different niche - different marketing. They know their business strategy better than you @brandon, believe me. That is just fundamentaly not even true. This line is imported to 16 regions around the world. Being that the three release prior to 2011 are not limited due to the different marketing associate with the line, they are being re-issued and sold again to all of those regions. What "Western demand" even have to do with anything? People for some reason like to think that they are the center of the world and attribute all to them. Yes NA is a huge market for Bandai imports, but it is not the leading market by any form or means, i'm sorry to say. You obviously have no knowledge about this industry, i'm sorry. Bandai have been selling their products and thriving on the franchise well before they Figuarts come to existence, the Dbz collectible market in jp have roots dating back to 1984, and selling merch ever since. That is just rude and uncalled for. With all my heart, I honestly don't care what you think.

That might be a new sig there m5. Seriously though, I'm surprised there is beef over the topic of bandai and their profit margins. There are some good points here, but unless someone who works there can confirm it is unlikely we will ever know the real scope of their business practices and margins.

Seriously though, I'm surprised there is beef over the topic of bandai and their profit margins. There are some good points here, but unless someone who works there can confirm it is unlikely we will ever know the real scope of their business practices and margins. Coot We all come from different backgrounds and perspectives on Bandai and this figure line, and even Dragon Ball's own homegrown popularity. I've been to Japan a number of times, but only once outside of Narita airport. I actually don't remember it at all. I lived in Thailand throughout the early to mid-90's and saw the original Dragon Ball Z hype in another country first-hand. I was caught up in it, it was everywhere. The power level cards, shirts, toys, commercials, the crappy photo-copied DBZ manga in Thai, Thai-dubbed DBZ anime on TV, etc. I also collected a line (G.I. Joe) that was in retail stores and went the same route as DBZ Figuarts with "online only". It was NOT a positive (or profitable) move at the time and I was at the Joe conventions asking Hasbro representatives directly about it. The line did survive thanks to the online route, but it didn't get better and they re-used a lot of molds. It only got better (for a little while) because of two reasons: 1) Hasbro was able to convince retailers to put G.I. Joe back in stores because they took a risk by updating the figures with the "25th Anniversary" line and 2) There was a G.I. Joe movie coming soon. That was years ago and now the line has since "died" and has gone back to online only re-using old molds and partially funded by the official Joe collector club. Obviously, DBZ Figuarts is in much better shape but there are some parallels.

Bardoon thanks for sharing your experience about when you were in Thailand. I agree that there is better opportunity for sales when you can have the product available in store for the customer. It's one thing to have items online only and later brought to stores, but to revert back to online only does say something to me as well about their possible loss in confidence in the product.
