Geez I didn't think New Zealand was that bad. To have a shop that sells stuff that smells so bad I would assume it would have been in a third world country. I will say that cheap plastic does have one of the most off putting smells out there it's not one u can describe to someone that hasn't smelt it. Could you imagine working in a factory that makes those toys geez u would prob die without a face mask of some kind. It doesn't even have to do with New Zealand though. Sure, we have our usual share of cheap dollar stores of all variety like every other place in the world, but they never usually smell THAT bad like how I described. Heck, most of them usually don't even have a smell, so it was that one store that was the odd one out.

the best bootleg i have ever seen in canada is a sword from Dollarama that is a lightsaber (vaders) marked and a "power Samurai sword" using a modified power rangers logo and has a picture of a "Ninja" (not a samurai) who is Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden/Dead or alive... 3 plagiarisms in one place and all stupid

I remember when I used to have all of my SBC, Irwin, and Jakks figures in a plastic bin, sealed away, I'd open the lid and it gave off such a beautiful aroma. It' the same smell I get when I open my armoire and lean in. Seriously. They smell great, like new toys. My customs were kept in a separate bin, so that was different, which just smelt the same, but with paint.

I would say no. I'm guessing you can get cancer from it. They say you can get cancer from breathing the air, hold your breath. The only thing I'd be leary of would be Chinese toys. Particularly the lead painted toys.

Adam I'm glad I'm not the only one that does that lol I open my glass case prob once a week and take a good whiff. For some reason it makes me think happy thoughts like opening a new figure I just got in the mail or something like that but I love the smell of new figures. They should make a car sent that smells like that I'd love to get in my car and have it smell like the inside of my display case

I've seen them before. It's those car scents you can buy. I think it's probably listed under new car smell. My name is Adam so I figured I'd respond.

I imagine the plastic of real manufactured figures is harmless, and taking whiffs of that for over 14 years has done me no harm. Bootlegs are another story. I have a few, including the Mexican Oceanus Shenron, but no odors come from them. And if there was, it would be drowned out by the great smell of Irwin and Jakks.

Yeah I can't see how that good of a smell could be harmful. I've been cought by my girl smelling figures after I first open them out of the package. She just stood there looking at me with this crazy face she makes and for about a min she didn't say a word as we just stared at each other then finally she said I don't even want to know y or what ur doing and then just walked away lol. I can only guess what she thought at that awkward moment when she cought me with a figure half out of the package basically crammed up my nose.

The "c" on PVC stands for chloride which can be harmful when it is heated or inhaled or comes into contact with skin especially from a manufacturing or casting standpoint. As long as ur bedroom isn't an oven you should be ok

I'll second that sentiment on the smell of a new toy though. It's wonderful. It's like to can smell the quality that was put into the figure

This is the second post I've seen that asks a question about toy toxicity. I'm going to try and nip this in the bud. The new toy smell are solvents from the paint that haven't completely evaporated by the time u recieve the toy. These are not toxic but can give u a headache, like any strong smell. it will pass when the smell is removed and will not cause ladting damage. In some cases they can be plasticisers in rubbery toys which smell too, SOME of these are harmful but legislation is making it impossible to get hold of these commercially and the manufacturers are re-formulating to avoid them. On the topic if lead containing paint, it is only harmful if u ingest it. Lead paint is largely replaced nowadays, and even when it is used there are limits to the amount you can put in the paint (much less than 0.1%). On the topic if PVC, someone has rightly identified it contains chlorine. When it burns hydrogen chloride is produced which reacts with moisture in the air to produce hydrochloric acid. This is harmful and can inhibit airways and vision. Again, only harmful if you BURN it. Some plasticisers are used in PVC to make it rubbery, but I have already covered those.
Ultimately don't worry, don't burn the figures and don't put them in ur mouth.
