This is just a little something I've thought about and would bring to your guys attention about good figures which could potentially be used as bases for custom figures, DB related or not. Think of this as a sorta unofficial checklist for custom figures bases Anyone on this board is free to add their own suggestions. Just be sure to include a few pictures that can show off what the figure can do and what it can be used for as a base. Figma - Figma Archetype Next: She - Flesh Colour
A very nice blank canvas that can be used for creating customs based off of Female characters from almost any media. Also very good when using as a drawing reference, similar to a wooden mannequin doll. Size is approximately in the 5 - 6 inch scale. Figma - Figma Archetype Nex: He - Flesh ColourA very nice blank canvas that can be used for creating customs based off of Male characters from almost any media. Also very good when using as a drawing reference, similar to a wooden mannequin doll. Size is approximately in the 5 - 6 inch scale. Also available in clear plastic. Figma - Billy HerringtonA figure particularly good for working off of characters who have a notable muscle build to them. Approximately in the 5 - 6 inch scale. Figma - EgashiraA figure particularly good for working off of characters who have a notable slim build to them. Approximately in the 5 - 6 inch scale.

Well, I have a few tips I can share for 5 inch scale customizers.
Doctor Who figures are great for DBZ characters who wear suits, lab coats, space suits, and more. I haven't found a single other completely unrelated line of figures with better male figures to fit in with irwin and jakks. Useful for the announcer, Dr Kochin, Dr Briefs.
Jakks and Mattel make wrestlers who are useful for Android 14, Abocado (with a lot of work), and Hatchiyak.
DC comics females are sometimes exactly the same height as irwin female characters. I believe the line of figures in particular is called Justice League Unlimited. Their heads are too small but the bodies are the right size. They are useful because they are basically naked because of skin tight costumes so you can basically sculpt whatever you need to right on top of them.

The Figma Archetypes are terrible bases... Because the flesh ones cost about $200 a piece on average.

The clear ones do go for cheap though. Last I checked, they go for about $100-$150... I'd be a little weary of pulling them apart, too, since they're made of clear plastic.

Mandarake usually sells them for at most $40 USD, like here - ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shop/en/item_s-1175000.htmlAlso, Figma bodies are a durable plastic, so I'm sure the clear ones can hold up as well.

Hm. $40 isn't bad. Nice find. I know that figmas are usually pretty durable, but crystal-clear plastics like that is always pretty brittle on toys. I've even had some clear figma stand pieces crack on me, so I'd be iffy on buying a whole figure that's clear.

I'm pretty sure it is the same plastic used on the clear as is used on the skin tone version. Kinda like they used on the Cobra Crystal Bowie figure.

Naked figures like that wouldn't be too useful for DBZ characters as very few DBZ characters are wearing skin tight outfits. If you think about it, that's what makes DBZ so much different from many other cartoon shows with fighting men and stuff--the characters actually wear pants and shirts!
It's very, very, very difficult to find action figures like that. Wrestlers are typically wearing funny square looking pants or no pants. Super heroes are typically basically naked or wearing really weird oversized boots or other annoying stuff you have to deal with when customizing them. What a lot of it comes down to is "can I actually find a figure from another toy line that is actually wearing pants?" lol. It's hard maintaining articulation when they aren't and you have to add them. Marvel Clownface is a good base figure for Ox King and what I used for mine... which still needs a ton of work. Mostly because he wasn't fat enough.
