I copied the title-style of this thread from Branjita's stickied threads.
What figures released from Japan do you think are overrated and why?
I honestly think that the Figuarts are overrated. Part of the reason being that I'm not a big fan of articulated figures, and I think the facial sculpts are usually mediocre at best.
My other choice is the Master Stars Piece Vegeta. I really don't like his facial sculpt, and don't really think it looks that much like Vegeta. They seem to have made him a tad young and "soft looking" as well. Not to mention the choice of costume is incredibly plain.
The Super Saiyan 3 Goku from the Scultures line I think is way overrated. I hate the stylization of him and the paint job. He's also too skinny, the texture of his clothes is weird, the sculpt of his hair is trash, and his face really looks nothing like Goku from the series. I don't own the figure, but I also heard that the peg that you use to stabilize his hair doesn't even match up to the position of his hair.

Jakks Bardock.
Yeah, yeah, I know he isn't Japanese, but it's the only figure I think is super overrated.

im gonna get flamed for this but oh well...92 SBC's are kinda overrated if you think about it from a certain point of view. i mean vol 1-10 is like $15-25 a piece. your essentially paying $100-200 a piece for a different style of the box design but contains the same figure. eheheheh doesnt mean i still dont want them though

I think SCultures SSJ3 Goku is overrated as well but I like it as an idealized version of SSJ3 rather than calling it an inaccurate representation. Kinda like the Wild Style line.

It's funny that you should mention that because I was actually thinking yesterday that it looked remarkably like the Wild Style sculpts. I wonder if the same sculptor did that line. I more just don't like the conveyed texture on the sculpt itself. The clothing almost looks like as if it were chiseled from concrete, and the consistency of the hair is neither realistic, nor remotely resembles the texture of the hair from the anime. The face doesn't look a lot like Goku, but I definitely don't think it's "bad" over-all. The stylization is a bit odd on it, but the face itself is pretty cool. I just believe that out of all the sculpts that have come out from the SCultures line, the one of the SSj3 Goku is definitely the one that stands out as odd and stylized. It's either a brilliant expression of artistic style, or an utter inability to correctly convey the likeness of the character. We may never know.

I'm with you guys, the Goku SSJ3 of sCultures 1 is overrated by many people and now is also a "rare" figure which speculators try to sell at 80$ or more. Me no understand.

I agree that the clothing is a bit over-textured but I definitely dig the sculpt on the muscles. The face and hair looks remarkable only from certain angles although I fail to understand why these figures are done with a stance that suggests a 'pectoral thrust'. And in reality, even if it's a failed attempt to depict the likeness of the character, I doubt the artist will ever confess so in order to save face I'm with you guys, the Goku SSJ3 of sCultures 1 is overrated by many people and now is also a "rare" figure which speculators try to sell at 80$ or more. Okay... I love the Master Stars Piece Vegeta, and I love pretty much all the SHF figures. I've gotta admit, though, I think The Master Stars Piece The Son Goku (SS) looks like crap. His paint choices are just... weird. And his face sculpt is terrible.

The Sculpt on the Master Stars SSj Goku was supposed to look like him from the manga, not the anime.
The figure's likeness to manga SSj Goku (Boo Arc) is actually pretty close if you compare the two. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the paint job on him. It's flat and stale.

I actually love the smirk on MSP SSJ Goku although like ya'all, I don't quite get the tone they chose for his hair.

I forgot to add the FiguArts Zero Trunks.
His stance is unnatural and his face looks weird. I also hate the energy effects around figures. If they're yellow, I think they look like frozen piss.

I spent a solid 10 minutes explaining to a non-DB fan (she loves my figures but at this point hadn't watched the show at all) why MSP Goku's smirk was amazing. I compared that face sculpt to the X-Plus one, which I really don't care for, and just rambled on. I can't wait to buy him. As for overrated figures, I'll second figuarts. They look really cool displayed and I dig how creative some people are with the poses, but those prices are just nutty.

Any sort of figures that have heavy shading and glossing, such as the Legend of Saiyan, Frieza Forces, HSCF and etc. It just does not suit Dragon Ball's style in my personal opinion.
Frankly, almost all of the end results look really ugly to me.

Well looking at the market, it really has to be SH Figuarts... I actually quite like the line of figures itself, but prices that people are willing to pay for them is simply insane. It's even to the point where people are paying decent amounts for a BOOTLEG version of it...
