If you could appreciate the level of detail crammed into figures of that scale, I would definitely advise you to go for it.

I want to one day make a guide covering all those HG scaled figures and lines, but i'm too lazy... ><
If you want variety of many diffrent characters in your collection for generally low price per piece, with high level of detailing, HG series Gashapons is the best thing for this type of thing.
Hypers blind boxes have many characters as well in the line, most prominent is the few Saiyan saga characters and DB characters that were made in the Hyper line.
HG on the opposite side have many Movie characters, Namek characters etc. The HG series offer more character variety by itself over hypers, but on top of that there are other lines and pieces like Freeza Force and Legend of Saiyan lines, Unifive Posing Figures, Bandai Imagantion, Megahouse, High Coloring Keychains, and many others that fit to the scale and add many other characters to the assortment.

It depends what you like. They're quite well detailed.
I collect the UDM line (Ultra Deformed, they're about 1.5 inches tall, 2 inches for bigger figures) and extremely well done for such a small scale. I've picked up some of the HG and DG stuff here and there. Some full 5-6 figure sets on eBay can cost you around $60-$80 depending on the seller.
Also, you'll probably have to be ordering a lot from overseas sellers. Not many sellers in the US carry a great diversity of Gashopon. And once they sell out, they either take a long time to restock or don't at all.
Good luck!

You definitely need to be resourceful if you want to collect diversity like I do and for a reasonable price. Many capsule station figures that aren't worth much at Japan demand very high prices form most sellers on ebay. That is pretty much the case for the entire international market of jp DB collectibles.
There are still a few HG sets and other Gashapons that are available on ebay though and don't cost so much, about 6-8 figures for 20-32$.
I know for a fact that in jp full sets are more valued as well. And apart from highly sought after rarity, like Ex, some DG releases, Hybrid Grade. most Gashapons are quite low in value in jp, especially by singles pick and not complete set.

As far as scale goes, M5 has illustrated that the HG scale (Goku about 9cm) is compatible with many other lines.
The quality varies some within the HG line. The DG - Digital Grade figures are higher quality overall. I would say that DG figures are either as good or better than their HG counterparts. The Hachette figures look amazing. I am also a fan of the High Grade Key Chains.
I think the fun comes in mixing the various lines and creating a cohesive collection featuring a wide variety of characters.
I have only spoken about lines I own figures from. The Legend of Saiyan figures look great in pictures and add a whole dimension of variety. Same with the Freeza Force, tho I am not big on the "glitter" look it seems to have in pictures I've seen.
There are other lines I can't think of now, but like I said that is part of my enjoyment.

I've really gotten into these guys recently. Does anyone know of a good place to find them for cheap? It does depend heavily on what sets\figures you are looking for, the various HG and DG varies in value from less to 100 Yen per piece to over 100$. You'll probably be best to just be getting the inexpensive sets of 35$ and under from off ebay. Most single pieces(with some exceptions) and the rarer sets acquiring from japan is the best way.

Definitely fromjapan/noppin (YJ!). It took me a few years, but got every single gasha from there, including the full EX set for 150 ^o^ It's a great place. Getting them all though will not be cheap, but way cheaper than DWC/WCF figures for sure (I still wish I could afford to collect those!). Just start out with the rare ones first IMO, the Majin Vegeta set 6, GTs, second set of action pose, HBG Broly and HG EX (you can find the full set in a box quite often for less than 200). Hybrid Grade Broly is up atm for 130 ending in about 7 hours or so, I'd jump for him if I were you! Great start. Then just keep searching and picking up full sets that are running super cheap at the time, or the big lots that go for dirt cheap can help get you a head start (just know its about 100$ to ship sometimes, I made that mistake, but it was still insanely cheaper than one by one with fees, etc). I'd avoid buying singles for "cheap" because you can almost always find the full set for 15-30$ and save shipping/fees. Enough rambling out of me! Hope you enjoy collecting them! I really love the size and detail of these, very little comes close. ^o^ Very easy to display as well. Edit: Please don't buy gashas from ebay if they are from Hong Kong. I've had way too many bad experiences. Avoid the headache!

Are HG gashapons still in production or are the ones selling online come from back in the day? What I mean is, can they still be found in gachapon machines in Japan?
