I'm super sighin' (see what I did there?) when it's pronounced like that too. It just sounds wrong.
I like the pronunciation of Kaioken as kay yo ken. The kai o ken pronunciation causes a little part of my childhood to die. I'm not sure which is correct.
I noticed the other day, that in Japanese, when perfect cell does kamehameha, he says ka mee ha mee ha, and I was a bit weirded out by that.

That's the correct pronunciation though. It's the English dub which got it wrong. (I still use the dub pronunciation because it's too deeply ingrained though  ) If they said "Saiya-jin" then that should be said with the cy-as-in-cyan, but "Saiyan" comes from the English dub, and should be pronounced as it is in the English dub. |

(I still use the dub pronunciation because it's too deeply ingrained though ) If they said "Saiya-jin" then that should be said with the cy-as-in-cyan, but "Saiyan" comes from the English dub, and should be pronounced as it is in the English dub. The "-jin" refers to as a people, so when translated it would come out as "Saiya People". "Saiyan" would be a translated equivalent to the English language. We don't say "Korea People" or "Russia People" now, do we? Plus, the original source for the name comes from the Japanese word for vegetable yasai (Yah-Sigh). Anybody who can say and pronounce "Cyan" perfectly well enough can easily do the same for "Saiyan" (Sigh-an). I'm not saying that you SHOULD just stop using the dub pronunciation and try to adapt to the original. I'm just giving info on why it's wrong and that there's nothing wrong with using 'Say-an". Hell, I just explained a few posts above that I still use "Say-an" because at this point in my life, it's far too deeply ingrained into my head to try otherwise. Also, "Saiyan" is not something that the English dub made up. It's been around longer than even Funimation has been in business. I remember back in the day when this big fat white girl was so obsessed with Inuyasha. She came on the bus wearing cat ears, many mocked her and she would be like "you all are baka" she would try to speak Japanese and was obsessed with writing in Kanji as well. She had all her school supplies with Inuyasha on it. I remember she sat by me on the bus and I felt so awkward, she looked at me and said "I am a neko " then she showed me sketches in her note book of herself. she drew her self very skinny, Anime style eyes and I was trying hard not to laugh when I compared her real self to her drawing. She was signing Japanese anime theme songs the whole way to school. Then my friend kicked the seat and whispered "is that your new girl friend?" I then blurted out "no are you crazy shut up!" then he was like "whens the wedding? are you buying a oak wood bed" I got so mad and I got up from my seat to move as far a way from the fat white cat anime chick, wile the bus was still moving and the bus jerked and I flew forward and fell on the floor and got in trouble by the bus driver for getting up lol When he asked you when the wedding was, you should have said "3 months from now." Lol. By the way, those commercials are atrocious. The cheesiest garbage I have ever seen. I remember those commercials and even disliked them back then. "GOHAN'S IN DANGER!!!" *dancing Nappa and Raditz* LMAO!!!!!! |

This is off-topic, but do you think there is a connection between Roshi living on an island, that might as well be a Hawaiian island, and King Kamehameha, a king of Hawaii? Japanese tourism in Hawaii is really popular, Toriyama may have gone, and been inspired. Roshi's island has palm trees, sea turtles, and permanent tropical weather, just like Hawaii. Then again, all weather in DB and DBZ is pretty much season free.
I know kamehameha is derived from that king's name, but is Roshi supposed to be on a Hawaii inspired island? No idea.
