Hey guys I been wanting to buy DBZ series, but which version would you guys recommend??? I've seen several different DVD versions, such as the ones that come in the Orange Boxes, also the newer Blue ray sets, the DBZ Kai box sets, One version called Rock the dragon. I am confused on which version to get. I recall seeing a thread about one of the versions cutting some of the Scenery or resolution off. So what I want to know is which is the best to get the best of the DBZ experience? Which one has the full scenery without it being cut off? I really want to buy the series but just don't know what version is the best out of the DBZ box sets, blue ray? Orange DVD sets? or any other versions?

The Dragon Boxes are the only definitive set out there... Of course they come at a cost.

If you want the full picture, no cropping, uncut, fully released and best available quality, the Dragon Boxes are your only choice really. Only issue with them is the non-inclusion of the dub score, so if you're fine with that, DBOXES for sure.

I own the entire DBZ series on Blu-Ray and you have two ways of seeing it. For example, there's the original version with no editing and then you have the marathon mode which contains all the editing and shrinks each episode time frame. Each episode is also uncorp, so you get see them in full screen.

Yes, the recent blu-ray sets that Funimation put out are cropped like the DVD Season Sets, though much better done. You're still losing more picture than you're actually gaining + the fact that it was never intended to be seen in 16:9 widescreen when it was animated for 4:3 fullscreen.

I like Rock the Dragon, but if you didn't grow up watching DBZ on cartoon network in the 90s, you might not like it. It's the Ocean/Pioneer dub and 4:3. I prefer it over the Funimation dub of Saiyan and early Namek Sagas.
The orange bricks are what I have for everything else and they are 16:9. They make me happy. Supposedly the first box or two are a little over corrected in color, but I haven't watched those sets yet. I started watching my collection of them at Garlic Jr saga and am currently in Buu saga. They are cheap and good overall, I have zero complaints right now. I wanted Dragon Boxes but I didn't see the point of paying 3 times as much (now it would be 5 times as much) for the series compared to the orange bricks.
I hated the first season set on blu-ray. I don't know if it was just a bad one or what, but the audio hurt my ears like crazy. It was like somebody turned the treble and bass up to the max and it sounded horrible on both my tv and computer. The picture was super cropped too and I didn't like it. I sold it on eBay three days after getting it.
There are two DBZ Level sets that are blu-ray and they are 4:3. They look really nice. I have them and I may never end up watching the first orange brick because of them. I think they have almost all of the episodes that are on it, and they look fantastic and don't have audio problems like the season set 1 did (unless mine was just a fluke).

Yeah, that's right! I knew you'd remember that. So I guess if somebody didn't care about their box sets being complete, the best cheap option would be buying the 2 level sets on blu-ray and then buy the individual last disk (I imagine the last disk from the season 1 orange brick has those 4 or more episodes). That's likely how I will rewatch DBZ once I finish Buu Saga and start over sometime late this year. I'll probably never even watch the first 5 disks of orange brick 1. Why watch it in lower quality and 16:9 when I don't have to?
