Barnabas Collins from the movie Dark Shadows, bloody editionDifficulty: 10/10
How to make: I was like one big custom figure for Halloween. I was this same character last year (
dragonballfigures.boards.net/post/124), but I made improvements this year, and also did the bloody version. First of all, I redid the finger extensions, which was mostly more paint work. I spent a really long time repainting them, trying to get a darker, more realistic look to them. In the process, I decided to add blood, which was also just paint.
Last year (no makeup/paint on my skin yet):
This year:
This year I spent more time on the details. I painted stitching on the collar of the shirt and on the cuffs. I also had to remake cuff links because last years' fell off. Those took me 4 hours of ridiculous time. Fortunately I didn't have to improve the necklace much other than add some glue to the jewel where it was lacking a bit of coating over the wax.
My makeup was significantly better this year because I watched a professional makeup artist make himself look like the character on youtube and I learned from his processes despite not having as many supplies at my disposal as he did. I also think I improved the accuracy of the hair style. This year I mixed some fleshtone into the white makeup to make myself less white. The eye makeup is a lot different. I shaded my cheeks and chin much better. Since I did not use pure white for my skin, I was able to add highlights to my nose and other areas.

This year:
Although not recommended, I used Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic paint for the blood on my face and the skin on my hands. I also mixed a matching color to put on my hands for the white flesh. The material safety datasheet or whatever for Delta Ceramcoat says it is non-toxic, but it's not made for skin. It cracks and flakes as it is not flexible. It also doesn't taste good. Yuck. I had to not let anyone touch my actual hands until after the contest, because last year people kept shaking my hand and screwing up my paint. This is a pic from the contest when we had to parade around in a circle and the judges would tell people to leave the floor if they weren't good enough. I slinked around and was lightly scratching and running my fingers down the arms of girls in the crowd and other contest participants. I also pretended to bite the necks of at least a dozen girls. I was definitely in character, which probably helped. I ended up being selected as one of the top 4, and the judging was by crowd screams, and I ended up getting 4th place, which I'm very satisfied with. I got $200. And this was out of hundreds of participants.
These are the only two pics taken of me with blood on my mouth before it started having minor problems with flaking off. Real blood flakes off too when it dries, so that actually was fine.
I had tons of fun photobombing people's pictures. I need to browse facebook and see if any strangers posted pics I'm in, but here are some of my favorite photo bombs of people I know. My eyes always have redeye in photos at night, so it created some spooky results.
And lastly, here's a picture of me biting a hot Wonder Woman's neck haha.
This year, the first and second place winners were great. Third place was decent, but not spectacular IMO. Just the fact that I was a character who is barely known and won anything is incredible.
First place were these 4 guys that were a roller coaster ride. They were really great.
2nd place was Bender from Futurama. This was a cool costume. There's a big difference between a costume where you build something, and one where you make yourself into someone. The biggest difference is it took me from 2:30pm until 7:25pm to get everything on me. His took about 2 minutes to put on lol.
3rd place were two members dressed as two members of the band KISS. Their costumes were purchased and not very elaborate, but it's impossible to beat highly recognizable characters, so I'm not surprised I didn't beat them. I'm more surprised I was chosen at all
. I don't have any pics of the 2nd guy, just 1 of them and their shoes.
Personally, I thought the guy dressed as Vanilla Ice kicked ass. He was born looking like the guy and had the perfect costume IMO.
